January in Catalina is rainier, windier, and cloudier than the spring, summer, and fall months. The weather and water temperature are also colder.

During the winter, the water can be uneven, leading to a rough ride on the ferry to Catalina Island. 

If you get seasick like me, visiting the island during the winter isn’t recommended. But if you enjoy adventure, it’ll be a fun bumpy ride.

Throughout the month, you can generally expect the weather to be consistently pleasant at around 65°F.

Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer offer a one-hour ferry. Choose to depart from these four cities closest to Catalina Island: Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, and Newport Beach.

What’s the cheapest way to get to Catalina Island?

If you’re flying to mainland California to visit Catalina Island, Long Beach Airport (code: LGB). However, LAX typically has better fares than Long Beach.

You can rent a car at the airport to travel to the ferry ports.

Travel Tip: During winter, typically from November to February, the Catalina Express limits the number of ferries to Avalon and only offers transportation to Two Harbors from the San Pedro port.  Call 800.481.3470 for more information.

Local and tourists travel via golf carts because Catalina restricts the number of cars on the island. You can either book a golf cart tour or rent a golf cart.

There is no Lyft or Uber on Catalina Island, and you can’t take your car, although taxis are allowed. You’ll find taxis as you exit the ferry terminal and the taxi stand (where Metropole Avenue meets Crescent Avenue).

Travel Tip: If traveling via the Catalina Express from Long Beach or San Pedro or the Catalina Flyer from Newport Beach, there are lockers for baggage at the ferry drop-off at Avalon Blue Line Baggage.
