In fact, I don’t recommend getting to Napa via public transportation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t! Napa is a challenging area to enjoy without a car because the vineyards are a good distance apart, and you have to walk on a busy road, which isn’t an enjoyable experience.

Napa is in Northern California; nights will be chilly. In the summer, restaurants will be air conditioned.
So please, do yourself a favor and bring a light jacket or sweater. Wine tours sometimes take you down to cellars, where the wine is fermenting. It is very chilly in those cellar! There is nothing more uncomfortable than being cold when you’re at a nice dinner or a tasting.
Wear your most comfortable shoes
When in Napa, you walk a lot. Some vineyards have miles and miles of land. Many vineyards give guests permission to roam outside. Some tours take you all over the property, so there is a lot of walking involved.
Be playful in how you dress
Wear a comfy dress with print, sling a cardigan or a light jean jacket over your shoulder, and a hat with a wide rim, and you’ll fit right in. Any clothing made of linen is very Napa-esque.
Are shorts, jeans, and T-shirts OK to wear in Napa?
Yup! But, you’re in Napa Valley, one of the most picturesque parts of the country. Give a little effort, and wear something comfortable but nice.
If you wear jeans or a T-shirt, make them the nicer ones from your wardrobe.
Jeans are a staple in California; we wear jeans to the fanciest restaurants, but they’re usually really expensive jeans.

Bring a bottle of water that you can leave in the car. You’ll likely be drinking wine and snacking on a charcuterie board in the sun!
You’ll dehydrate faster because of the environment and all the wine, cheese, meat, and walking!
I use the Water-To-Go-Bottle. It is a filterable bottle. I can fill it up anywhere, and it will filter out harmful chemicals from tap water (and bottled, hey, not all bottled water is pure), so I know that wherever I travel, I’ll have safe, clean drinking water.

In Napa, wine-tasting fees vary. There is no typical fee. Two of the tours starting in San Francisco —mentioned on this list — include the cost of tastings, except for the Napa Valley Private Car Tour. This tour is customizable, so you decide which vineyards are important to you.
That’s why I love this tour; each vineyard differs from the next. If you have your heart set on visiting Charles Krug Winery (one of my favs), you can let your driver know you want to stop at Krug. In that case, fees are separate.
Tasting fees can be as low as $20 and as high as $200. On average, they’re somewhere between $40 and $50.
Can you visit Napa wineries without a reservation?
While some smaller wineries allow you to walk in without a reservation, they are few and far between, and you’ll have to do a lot of on-the-spot calling if you have called each one in advance.
This happened to me recently on a last-minute trip to Napa. It made the trip more stressful, and we ended up in an awful touristy winery because all the good ones were booked.
The good old days of the “pop-in” tastings are over.
Most wineries now require a reservation in advance, and reservations are strictly enforced.
During peak season, August through October (the region’s harvest season), book at least two weeks in advance or more; the further out, the better. I was surprised at how busy Napa was the last time there.

Calistoga is a quaint little town a short drive from Napa, about 26 miles. There’s one street through town with plenty of boutique shopping, restaurants, and bars.
At the end of the street are little hotels that have hot springs.
You go to Calistoga to soak in the mineral tubs and baths and relax from a hard day of wine tasting. It is a place of healing. Calistoga is a great place to get away with a romantic partner.
The best and my favorite hotel to stay in is Dr. Wilkinsons Backyard Resort and Mineral Springs, a Member of Design Hotels. It’s a place from another time, you won’t forget the experience anytime soon.
The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone
I have had some of the best meals at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. My mouth and mind are blown whenever I stop and eat lunch here. It’s a must-do when you are in Napa for any meal. And if you love kitchen gadgets as much as I do (even though I don’t cook!), you will love the Institute’s gift shop. It has one of the best gift stores I’ve ever been to!!
The grounds at The Culinary Institute of America are worth the stop.
