Wrigley Memorial and Catalina Island History
Wrigley’s vision was instrumental in transforming the island into a popular resort destination and a hub for significant developments in the early 20th century.
Wrigley’s huge influence on Catalina Island cannot be understated.
So it’s fitting that the memorial is his final resting place; his grave is at the top of the hill.

The Memorial dedicated to Wrigley by his wife, Ada Wrigley, stands at the heart of the garden and was completed in 1934, a year after Wrigley’s death, as a celebration of his life and contributions.
15 Reasons Why Catalina Island is Worth Visiting
Once at the top, it provides stunning vistas that sweep down Avalon Canyon and extend across the San Pedro Channel, offering a panoramic view of mainland California, including the town of Avalon, Little Harbor, Long Beach, and Los Angeles.

The Wrigley Memorial is an architectural marvel, blending Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival styles, and it is constructed using primarily native materials of Catalina Island, such as blue flagstone and Catalina tiles.
Construction of the Wrigley Memorial started in 1933, focusing on using materials that were made or taken from the island.
This led to the creation of the tile company from which all the tiles that line the Memorial came.

The bright blue and white decorative tiles are truly stunning.
This integration of local materials showcases the island’s unique geological and cultural heritage and underlines Wrigley’s commitment to Catalina Island’s environmental and economic sustainability.

Catalina Canyon Tile
The tiles used in constructing the Wrigley Memorial on Catalina Island hold a fascinating story, embodying a unique blend of art, history, and local craftsmanship.
These tiles were produced at the Catalina Pottery Plant, owned by the Wrigley family.
Established in the 1920s, the pottery plant became renowned for its distinctive Catalina Clay products (red roof tiles), a range of decorative and functional pottery that reflected the Art Deco style popular at the time.
The tiles for the Wrigley Memorial were specially crafted at this local plant, making of them an intrinsic part of the island’s cultural heritage.

What makes these tiles particularly interesting is their vibrant colors and intricate designs, typical of the Art Deco movement.
They showcase a rich palette of blues, reds, and greens inspired by the island’s natural surroundings — the blue of the ocean, the green of the landscape, and the red of the native toyon berries.

These tiles are not just decorative elements; they symbolize the intersection of natural beauty and human creativity that characterizes Catalina Island.
Their presence in the Wrigley Memorial is a lasting tribute to the island’s artistic legacy and the Wrigley family’s commitment to preserving and celebrating the local culture and environment.

Wrigley Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Garden surrounding the Memorial is dedicated to conserving native plants, particularly those endemic to California’s Channel Islands, including several rare and endangered species.

Over the decades, the 38-acre gardens have evolved into a botanical research and education center, attracting visitors, researchers, and nature enthusiasts worldwide.
Its unique collection of plant life and picturesque setting make it a cherished landmark, embodying both Catalina Island’s natural beauty and rich history.
