First Visit June Lake Overlook
The June Lake Overlook provides an initial glimpse of June Lake, set against the majestic backdrop of Carson Peak.
Previously, the Oh Ridge Outlook Tower used to stand here, providing an even more spectacular view, but it has since been taken down.
Nevertheless, the view remains a worthwhile stop.
At this spot, you’ll encounter a fascinating historical marker known as the “Legend of June Lake Slot Machines.”
During the 1930s, despite their illegality, local cafes and bars installed slot machines to entertain workers involved in a regional infrastructure project.
Demand dwindled once the project concluded, leading to the removal of numerous machines in the following years.
As authorities closed in during an impending raid, the last few machines were reportedly hastily discarded into June Lake.
Efforts to locate the dumped slot machines through diving have proven fruitless. These machines were purportedly not emptied when disposed of, leaving the possibility that they may still hold a trove of old silver dollars.
Next Stop: June Lake Beach
If you long for some beach time, head to June Lake Beach. Drive on North Shore Road to access June Lake Beach Road for a water-level view of June Lake.
Nestled along the shores of June Lake, the beach offers a perfect location to unwind and soak up the sun.

This swimming beach is a popular spot to rent equipment during the summer. Enjoy wading, swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding.

Nestled amidst the Eastern Sierra mountains, this petite lake boasts breathtaking scenery, characterized by its enchanting green-blue waters and picturesque willows along the shoreline.
Continue on the June Lake Scenic Loop
The stretch between Gull Lake and Silver Lake on the loop offers uninterrupted driving amidst breathtaking alpine scenery. You won’t be able to resist stopping to get Insta-worthy photos of this drive.
Aspens, willows, and towering mountains surround the winding road. If you park and look up into the mountains, you can catch a glimpse of Horsetail Waterfall, a short distance past the Yosemite Gateway Chalet.
Shaped like a horseshoe, the June Lake Valley was carved by glaciers in the last ice age. Watch for Rush Creek flowing beneath the road just before you reach Silver Lake.

For day visitors who love hiking, consider exploring the Rush Creek Trail leading to Agnew Lake.
This moderate-rated out-and-back trail spans approximately 4.2 miles round trip, with the trailhead appearing just before you reach Silver Lake.
Climbing via switchbacks leads you to Agnew Lake, a picturesque mountain-set lake.
You’ll pass Horsetail Falls, visible from the June Lake Loop Road, especially in early summer.
You can extend your hike a bit to reach Gem Lake before returning. The Rush Creek Trail continues to the Ansel Adams Wilderness and Yosemite National Park.
Alternatively, if you prefer something other than hiking or you’re pressed for time, you can drive to Agnew Lake and Gem Lake from the June Lake Loop Road via the Rush Creek Substation Road.

Silver Lake is a great place to have lunch. If you didn’t bring a picnic, the cafe at Silver Lake Resort is famous for its hearty breakfasts, but they have a good choice of sandwiches, burgers, and salads.
The lake has a stunning setting, and kayaks and fishing boats are available for rent.
Visit Grant Lake
Once you leave Silver Lake, the road parallels Rush Creek, tracing its journey from Silver Lake to Grant Lake.
Following its course is a delightful experience.
As the largest and deepest lake in the region, Grant Lake boasts an abundance of recreational activities like boating, fishing, or simply relaxing by the shore.
Take advantage of the opportunity to watch the mesmerizing sunset over the lake, painting the sky with vibrant hues.
Grant Lake is less populated because it’s the least picturesque.
During the season, you can rent boats at the Grant Lake Marina for sailing, windsurfing, and regular boating.
Grant Lake also permits speedboats and personal watercraft, making it suitable for waterskiing and wakeboarding. Fishing is another popular activity at Grant Lake.
Just a bit further past Grant Lake, you’ll reach the northern endpoint of the June Lake Loop.
