From the Author: Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur is a must-see, bucket-worthy off-the-beaten-path excursion. There is simply nothing like it when you see it in person.
You may have seen photos of Keyhole Arch; it’s one of the most photographed rocks, especially as the California sun peaks through making the arch glow bright orange. And you may be wondering where the “purple sand beach” is located; that would be Pfeiffer Beach Big Sur. Keyhole Arch sits on Pfeiffer Beach. It’s stunning in real life but can be difficult to get to because of the recent rains and erosion of some roads in Big Sur.
Let’s get into it so you have the best chance of seeing this magnificent rock formation.
Special note: I’ve traveled to Big Sur more times than I can count; it’s one of the best road trips in California. I also ran the Big Sur Marathon, the most stunning run in the country. As of April 2, 2025, a significant portion of Highway 1 in the Big Sur region remains closed due to ongoing repairs at Regent’s Slide. This 6.8-mile segment is closed from approximately one mile south of the Esalen Institute to two miles north of the town of Lucia. The closure is a result of a major landslide that occurred in February 2024, and the reopening has been delayed due to continued land movement and slope instability.

RVs and trailers are prohibited due to their narrowness and curves—watch for the yellow “Narrow Road” sign at the turn-off. Heading south from the State Park entrance, it is the second right turn.

Pfeiffer Beach is off Highway 1. When driving on the Pacific Coast Highway or Coast Highway, Pfeiffer Beach is a little hard to find because it’s not marked or visible from Highway 1.

How to Get to Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, California
To reach Pfeiffer Beach, you’ll need to navigate along the scenic Highway 1 in Big Sur. It’s located between Big Sur Station in the north and the Big Sur Post Office in the south.
As you drive through this beautiful coastal stretch, keep an eye out for signs pointing to Sycamore Canyon Road, which will lead you to your destination.
Once you turn onto Sycamore Canyon Road, you’ll find that it is quite narrow and winding, so take your time and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
This road is not recommended for RVs or trailers due to its tight turns and limited space.
Directions to Pfeiffer Beach from the north
If you’re traveling from the north, you’ll encounter the turnoff for Sycamore Canyon approximately 1.1 miles after passing the entrance to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Keep an eye out for this turn as it is a particularly sharp right turn that you won’t want to miss.
Directions to Pfeiffer Beach from the south
When approaching from the south, be on the lookout for the turnoff around 1.8 miles after you pass Nepenthe Restaurant.
Alternatively, it’s approximately 9.8 miles north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Utilizing your odometer to gauge the distance is a helpful tip to ensure you don’t miss the turnoff.
Stay alert and enjoy the journey to Sycamore Canyon!
While Sycamore Canyon Road is paved, it’s important to exercise caution as you may encounter some potholes along the way. The road itself is winding, exceptionally narrow, and not suitable for RVs and trailers.
To accommodate oncoming traffic, you may need to utilize pullouts and yield accordingly.
As you wind down this scenic route, lush forests envelop both sides of the road, creating a serene ambiance.
Be prepared to come across deer during your journey, adding to the natural allure of the area.
Drive attentively and enjoy the beauty of Sycamore Canyon Road on your way to Pfeiffer Beach.
Travel Tip: Remember that uphill traffic has the right of way.
After driving about two miles down Sycamore Canyon Road, you will come across the parking lot for Pfeiffer Beach.
Once parked, a brief sandy trail awaits, guiding you from the parking lot through a picturesque grove of Monterey cypress trees and leading you directly on a short walk onto the beach! A purple sand beach. ☀️
💡 Travel Tip: Be aware that the parking lot can fill up quickly, especially during peak visiting hours and weekends. Arriving early or visiting during the week might increase your chances of finding a spot.

Big Sur is a rugged stretch of California’s central coast between Carmel and San Simeon in Monterey County.
Bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean, it’s traversed by narrow, 2-lane highway known as Highway Route 1 (Californias call it “the one”), known for winding turns, seaside cliffs, and views of the often-misty coastline.

There are a lot of must-sees in the Big Sur area with the name “Pfeiffer.”
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is in a different location than Pfeiffer Beach. It’s about 10 miles south of Pfeiffer Beach.
The same is true of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Pfeiffer Beach has nothing to do with Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The two places are approximately 3 miles from each other. A nice hike on beautiful trails is a great way to see both.
Los Padres National Forest manages Pfeiffer Beach, and The Parks Management Company operates the day-use area of Pfeiffer Beach for the Forest Service.
When is Pfeiffer Beach open to the public?
Pfeiffer Beach welcomes visitors year-round, offering its serene beauty from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm or sunset, whichever comes first.
Near the beach, you’ll find a convenient small parking lot, facilities, and a few picnic tables.
If you’re planning to bring your furry companion along, dogs on a leash are permitted on Pfeiffer Beach.
Please note that at the time of writing, there is a Pfeiffer Beach day use area and parking fee of $15.00 for Pfeiffer Beach.

Nighttime temperatures in summer can cool down to the 50s Fahrenheit (10-15° C), and in winter, they can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit (4-9° C).

The parking lot at the bottom of Sycamore Canyon Road in Big Sur is small and tends to fill up quickly.
While this limited parking ensures that the beach never feels overcrowded, it also means that arriving early is essential to secure a spot.
If you happen to arrive when the lot is full, you might be asked to wait for a space to become available or potentially be turned away.
Previously, there was an overflow parking lot at the top of the road, but according to recent information, it seems that it is no longer available.
As a result, it’s crucial to plan ahead and aim to arrive early to ensure you have parking options.
Bring cash for the entrance fee
During our visit, we encountered a situation where we were required to pay the entrance fee in cash, even though this detail was not explicitly mentioned on the National Forest website.
To ensure a smooth experience, it is advisable to come prepared with enough cash to cover the admission fee, which is currently priced at $12.00.
This way, you can avoid any inconvenience or delays upon arrival. It’s always good to have a bit of cash when you travel.
Wear Layers
Similar to other beaches in northern and central California, Pfeiffer Beach is known for its cool and often breezy conditions, rather than warm and balmy weather.
If there is a marine layer present, you can expect the temperatures to feel even colder.

If camping isn’t for you (I like a mattress), there are a few options in the area for accommodations.
The four closest hotels to Pfeiffer Beach are Alila Ventana Big Sur (adults only), Big Sur Lodge, Sur Grove Big Sur, and Big Sur River Inn, each an excellent choice with excellent ratings.
Alila Ventana is the most luxurious, but children aren’t allowed.
Where to Eat Near Pfeiffer Beach
This part of Big Sur is remote. If you prefer not to picnic there is always the classic NEPENTHE or Big Sur Bakery.
Big Sur Bakery serves soups, sandwiches, baked goods, and other breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. It’s only about 3 miles from Pfeiffer Beach, approximately 10 minutes by car.
NEPENTHE stands on the site of The Log House, Big Sur, 808 feet above sea level, which was built by the old “Trails Club” in 1925. They have a nice outdoor deck to eat lunch on and serve an “Ambrosiaburger” sandwich on a French roll with an ambrosia Sauce that is quite good. The food has a Greek flare.
NEPENTHE is about 4 miles south of Pfeiffer Beach and takes approximately 15 minutes to reach by car.
