San Francisco vs Los Angeles, which is better?

As someone who has lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles for many years, I’m uniquely qualified to weigh in on the ongoing debate of San Francisco vs Los Angeles.

Both cities have something unique to offer visitors. 

They differ in so many areas it’s hard to believe the cities are in the same state.

Even the terrain is different; San Francisco is a compact city built on a rock, while Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis offering nearly every experience.

It’s a bit ridiculous to compare the two, but let’s do it!

San Francisco vs Los Angeles Cost of Living

Both cities have a high cost of living; California is one of the most expensive states to live in.

According to NerdWallet.com, the cost of living in San Francisco is 23% higher than in Los Angeles. 

As someone who has owned and rented in both places, I can tell you this feels true.

Because San Francisco is a relatively small city compared to sprawling Los Angeles, there is less housing in San Francisco; supply regulates the housing market.

Housing Costs

San Francisco is renowned for its exorbitant housing expenses, boasting a median home price of approximately $1.3 million and an average monthly rent of around $3,313 for a one-bedroom apartment (737 sq. ft.). Yes, you read that correctly.

Similarly, Los Angeles also experiences notable housing costs, with a median home price of approximately $1.1 million and an average monthly rent of about $2,781 for a one-bedroom apartment (788 sq. ft). Yes, you read that correctly.

But in LA, the weather allows us to get outside year-round.

Food Costs

The cost of food is higher in Los Angeles than in San Francisco.

A meal at a restaurant can cost around $18 to $20 in San Francisco, whereas it may cost around $20-$23 in Los Angeles.

To me, this is a tie. You can get a quality meal in both cities for about $20 to 25 dollars. It usually involves Mexican cuisine, which suits me just fine! Los Angeles boasts some of the best Mexican cuisine in the country.

Utilities

In terms of utility expenses, San Francisco surpasses Los Angeles in terms of costs for electricity, gas, and water.

The average monthly expenditure on utilities for a two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco stands at approximately $200, while in Los Angeles, it hovers around $150.

Los Angeles emerges as the preferable choice between the two cities in terms of housing affordability, but not by much.

Vacation in San Francisco or Los Angeles

It depends on what type of vacation you have in mind.

Both offer incredible outdoor experiences, but San Francisco wins if you want a compact city. You can walk from attraction to attraction in SF easily. It’s a very pedestrian-friendly city.

If you stay in Downtown San Francisco, you can walk to Chinatown (the oldest and second largest Chinese American community in the United States —NYC is first!), North Beach, Union Square, Market Street, and Nob Hill all on the same day. I’ve done it!

Los Angeles has far more to see and do, and those attractions are spread out. The Hollywood Sign is a good 1.5 hours from Malibu, and it would take days to walk there.

In Los Angeles, you need a car to get around, while in San Francisco, you can easily rely on public transportation. LA’s public transportation is lacking, to say the least. 

Los Angeles wins for beach vacations.

LA has thousands of incredible beaches, from Santa Barbara to Malibu to Pismo Beach and beyond.

There are endless towns dedicated to surfing alone, and LA has the stars, the glitz, and the glamour. 

You will likely see a celebrity if you spend time in Malibu, The Grove, or West Hollywood. 

I lived in West Hollywood when I first moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco, and celebrities are everywhere — at the grocery store, the drug store, and the hardware stores. 

Both have rich cultural scenes.

Los Angeles wins hands down for the most culturally diverse city in California; San Francisco doesn’t even break the top 7.

Hotels and Accommodations in San Francisco vs Los Angeles

As you can imagine, hotel accommodations vary significantly in each city.

In Los Angeles, the average hotel price based on data from 350 hotels is an affordable $169, and the median price is $149.

The average cost for overnight accommodation in San Francisco was $211 in January 2022, up from the previous month’s total of $194 dollars.

As you can see, San Francisco wins for most expensive hotel accommodations.

San Francisco vs Los Angeles: Nightlife

Los Angeles

The nightlife in Los Angeles is vibrant and diverse, offering a wide range of entertainment options for residents and visitors alike.

The city is known for its thriving nightlife scene, with various venues, clubs, bars, and restaurants catering to different tastes and preferences.

In areas like Hollywood, West Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and Santa Monica, you’ll find a plethora of trendy nightclubs and bars where you can enjoy live music, dance floors, and DJ performances.

These areas often attract celebrities and offer a lively atmosphere.

For those seeking a more relaxed nightlife experience, there are numerous lounges, rooftop bars, and speakeasies scattered throughout the city.

These venues provide a sophisticated ambiance and are perfect for socializing, enjoying craft cocktails, or simply unwinding with friends.

Los Angeles is also home to a thriving live music scene, with many renowned music venues showcasing both local and international talent across a variety of genres.

From intimate concert halls to large arenas, there are plenty of opportunities to catch live performances and enjoy the city’s rich musical culture.

• The Hollywood Bowl
• The Greek
• The Ford

When visiting Los Angeles, if you have a chance to see any show at the Greek, do so; it’s an amazing LA experience like no other, it’s outside in the cool, sweet California air, and every seat is a good seat.

I saw Brandi Carlile at The Greek last minute.

It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever experienced.

I looked for tickets that day and got two box seats for $75 each. (this was before everyone knew her).

Insider tip: Agents, managers, and firms release their hold on VIP seats that their celebrity clients don’t ask for the day of a concert so you can get great seats for a fraction of the price.

San Francisco

In areas like the Mission District, SoMa (South of Market), North Beach, and the Castro, you’ll find a bustling nightlife with numerous bars, clubs, and live music venues.

These neighborhoods are known for their energetic atmosphere, featuring a mix of trendy bars, dance clubs, and live music performances.

San Francisco also has a thriving craft cocktail scene, with many speakeasies and upscale bars serving expertly crafted drinks in stylish settings.

These establishments often prioritize artisanal ingredients and creative mixology techniques, providing a sophisticated and intimate ambiance for those seeking a refined nightlife experience.

For those interested in performing arts and theater, San Francisco offers a range of venues showcasing plays, musicals, and live performances. There are many things to do in San Francisco, no matter the neighborhood. 

San Francisco is a more romantic city with a European vibe and plenty of things for couples to do in San Francisco.

The city’s theater scene is vibrant, with options ranging from Broadway shows to avant-garde productions, providing a diverse cultural experience for nightlife enthusiasts.

San Francisco vs Los Angeles: Food and Restaurants

Regarding food, San Francisco is one of the best cities to eat in.

The people of San Francisco take their farm-to-table California cuisine seriously, and they work with the best ingredients in the country from the farms surrounding the city.

The climate and soil in Northern California produce the best food, and that food doesn’t have far to travel to San Francisco, so it’s exceedingly fresh. 

The Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market is a gastronomical delight and was my weekly must-do when I lived in San Francisco.

From a sandwich at a local grocery store to the best Michelin-star restaurant, San Francisco wins in the cuisine area, an important category to take for the win.

🤤 Seafood

Since San Francisco is right on the California Coast, it offers some of the best seafood in the country. You’ll find several options in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Other options for excellent seafood include Fog Harbor Fish House, Scoma’s Restaurant, Sotto Mare, and Hog Island Oyster Co.

🤤 Italian Cuisine

When I lived on Nob Hill in SF, every Sunday, I’d walk the two miles to North Beach just to have a cappuccino at Tosca Cafe. They knew my name. The baristas still recognize me when I visit San Francisco from LA. 

Another great spot is Tony’s Pizza Napoletana. It is probably the best pizza in the country. I’m not the only one who thinks this; I just heard a Chef say the same thing yesterday on NPR.

🤤 Asian Cuisine

San Francisco is home to the second largest Chinatown in the country (come ya’ll, you know NYC is first). SF has some of the best Asian food, along with LA and New York City. I can’t count how many times I’ve been to House of Nanking, my SF friends make fun of me because it’s touristy, but it’s the best. 

Tourists don’t scare me; they may visit the House of Nanking in droves, but that food is worth dealing with a line and a throng of excited tourists!

Los Angeles

Los Angeles isn’t far behind San Francisco in the food area — it may even be a tie. LA is home to every cuisine, and Angelenos go out to eat a lot!

From Antony-Bourdain-worthy Korean BBQ in the local strip mall to gourmet Sushi to the local Shabu-Shabu bar, we have so many restaurants to eat in and too little time.

Los Angeles is home to some of the best Mexican food anywhere. 

LA is the most culturally diverse city in the country; we have some of the best restaurants created by people of every ethnicity and background.

You can find five-star eats out of a local food truck started by someone who fused their Asian heritage with their Hispanic heritage. 

It’s worth living in LA just for the food alone.

🤤 Mexican Cuisine

I’m not sure how to pick just a few Mexican restaurants to recommend, but I’ll give you some of the best. They all have different specialties.

If you want an old-school restaurant with deep leather booths, an Old Hollywood atmosphere, and authentic Mexican food, Casa Vega in Studio City is a favorite, and you’ll most likely see a celebrity if you go at noon on a Thursday.

Casa Vega is a treat; it’s one of the longest continuously family-owned restaurants in greater Los Angeles. You have to experience it at least once.

For Yucatánean flavors try Ka’Teen. For Oaxacan cuisine, try Koreatown’s Guelaguetza; they have live music and brightly colored walls, and the food is top-tier. Try Terrazzo Cha Cha Chá in the Arts District for a rooftop destination.

🤤 Korean Cuisine

The best places to eat Korean food are ABSteak, Mapo Dak Galbi, and Chosun Galbee.

Let’s define California Cuisine.

California Cuisine relies on fresh ingredients local to California while highlighting an extensive array of culinary influences from across the globe.

Los Angeles has plenty of that, from gourmet tacos to a Cobb salad or a Club sandwich made with Niman Ranch bacon and cage-free turkey.

San Francisco and Los Angeles both excel in the California Cuisine space.

Public Transportation: San Francisco vs Los Angeles

San Francisco

San Francisco is a more walkable city, with a comprehensive metro line (BART) that stops in key parts of the city.

The city offers buses and cable cars, making public transportation more accessible and reliable than in Los Angeles. 

However, be prepared to pay a bit more for public transportation in San Francisco.

Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, the city’s sprawl requires frequent driving on freeways that connect different towns. 

Here, you’ll encounter heavy traffic, making it essential to have your own vehicle or use ridesharing services. 

However, the cost of parking can add up, so make sure to take that into account when planning your budget.

San Francisco vs Los Angeles: Safety Concerns

When it comes to safety, San Francisco falls short in making a convincing argument.

With a crime rate of approximately 54 incidents per thousand citizens, the city experiences some of the highest crime rates in the United States.

It is important to mention that most reported incidents occur in suburban areas rather than busy tourist attractions.

In contrast, Los Angeles performs slightly better, with a crime rate of 32 incidents per thousand residents, positioning it as the safer choice between the two cities.

Healthcare

California has state-of-the-art hospitals and Covered California.

The exchange enables eligible individuals and small businesses to purchase private health insurance coverage at federally subsidized rates.

Los Angeles boasts some of the finest hospitals in the nation, renowned for their provision of advanced medical care.

Similarly, San Francisco prides itself on its exceptional medical teams and esteemed medical centers, ensuring widespread access to quality treatment.

San Francisco is distinguished by the presence of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), a prestigious medical school and healthcare system, consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the country.

When I lived in San Francisco, most of my doctors were at UCSF; I received some of the best care.

Los Angeles also houses esteemed healthcare institutions, such as the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, both recognized for their excellence in medical care.

Both cities offer a diverse range of healthcare options, encompassing public hospitals, private hospitals, and community clinics, thereby ensuring comprehensive healthcare services for their residents.

Quality of Life

Based on the numbers, Californians have a high quality of life. It’s California!, the most visited state in the country.

Based on the USNews report, San Francisco achieves a quality of life score of 6.8 out of 10, slightly higher than Los Angeles, which scores 6.5.

Weather in San Francisco vs Los Angeles

Los Angeles has the best weather in the country. It’s gorgeous most days.

LA benefits from its exceptional weather throughout the year, courtesy of its distinctive geographical features. The city’s mountain range and coastal line contribute to an average temperature hovering around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Similarly, San Francisco experiences relatively stable weather, with minimal variations between winter and summer. Rainfall is predominantly concentrated during the winter season, accompanied by approximately 100 foggy days per year. 

As an ex-San Franciscan, it felt like more than 100 days of fog, I’d say most days, but I lived very close to the Bay.

I could never live in London.

Population

And this is why I prefer Los Angeles to San Francisco, I need space. San Francisco is 3 times as dense in terms of population compared to sprawling Los Angeles.

To provide a clearer picture, Los Angeles spans an expansive area of about 503 square miles, whereas San Francisco covers a smaller expanse of approximately 47 square miles. That is a massive difference. 

Los Angeles is home to approximately 3.8 million people, establishing itself as one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. 

On the other hand, San Francisco accommodates around 815,000 residents.

Who Are More Snobby: Angelinos or San Franciscans?

I don’t have any data on this, but as someone who lived in both places, San Franciscans are snobbier.

Angelenos have a more “live and let live non-judgemental vibe,” while San Franciscans try to be seen at every restaurant on the SF Chronicles’s Best Restaurant list.

They love these lists.

San Francisco is LA’s little sibling, always trying to compete, while Angelinos ignore San Franciscan’s insecurities. Angelenos live in Southern California, and there’s no better lifestyle if you can get it. San Franciscans are a bit touchy on the subject and will most likely mention how much better they are than us heathens in LA LA Land, while we’re on the beach trying to catch a wave.

Attractions in San Francisco Or Los Angeles

Both cities act as a great base from which to see surrounding areas like Napa, Sonoma, and Stinson Beach from San Francisco, as well as Joshua Tree, Big Bear, Santa Barbara, and Palm Springs from Los Angeles.

Some of the most desired locations are within driving distance of these two great cities. 

The top attractions in San Francisco are the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio, Haight-Ashbury,  Chinatown, and Downtown San Francisco for its excellent shopping in Union Square.

In Los Angeles, the top attractions are the Hollywood Sign, the Griffith Observatory, the Walk of Fame, and the many beaches.

Of course, there is plenty of entertainment for the little ones in the family, with Disneyland Park and Universal Studios Hollywood right here in the world’s entertainment capital.

San Francisco vs Los Angeles: Traffic

When visiting or relocating to LA, be prepared for lengthy periods spent navigating through traffic —sometimes 8 lanes across.

The city’s traffic congestion is notorious, to the extent that the average resident spends approximately 153 hours in their car each year, with 81 hours directly attributed to traffic congestion.

San Francisco’s traffic, while more manageable, still demands a significant amount of time behind the wheel.

The average driver in San Francisco spends about 69 hours in their car due to traffic.

However, driving in San Francisco presents additional challenges with its steep hills and narrow streets, requiring extra caution and skill.

Both cities have their distinct traffic challenges.

Each is unique. It depends on what you are looking for. Los Angeles has a variety of tourist attractions that are far and wide, so you would need to rent a car. San Francisco is pedestrian-friendly, and walking in tourist areas and seeing a lot on foot is easier.

Although smaller, San Francisco is celebrated for its outdoor recreational opportunities, vibrant cultural scene, and diverse culinary offerings (Los Angeles has all of that as well).

However, it is accompanied by a higher cost of living, unpredictable weather patterns, and hard-to-find parking living.

Los Angeles, with its sprawling landscape, is renowned for its prominent entertainment industry, picturesque beaches, and multicultural populace. It offers a relatively lower cost of living but is burdened with traffic congestion and air quality concerns.

Ultimately, choosing between the two cities depends on individual preferences and priorities, as San Francisco and Los Angeles present distinct experiences and considerations.

For this California girl, Los Angeles’ amazing year-round perfect weather and ability to easily park gives it an edge over San Francisco. It pains me to say this, San Francisco is the first city on the West Coast I fell in love with.

It’s empirically the prettiest place in the country.

It’s a tie, with LA having an edge. (p.s. Angelenos don’t have to deal with tech bros, a massive upside to living in LA).
