One of the best spots to snorkel on Catalina Island is Lover’s Cove in Avalon. Lover’s Cove is a secluded spot great for snorkeling. Pick up snorkels in Avalon before heading to Lover’s Cove.
Another great place to snorkel in Avalon is Casino Point Dive Park/Avalon Dive Park. You can easily pick up snorkel rentals near the park.
Emerald Bay
Emerald Bay rests on Catalina’s western edge, approximately two nautical miles northwest of the Isthmus side of Two Harbors.
This haven is cherished for its tranquil ambiance, with its beach, hiking trails, and prime snorkeling opportunities rendering it a top-tier choice for a serene weekend escape on Catalina Island.
The nearby Two Harbors stands as the closest hub for essentials like snorkeling gear.
It’s worth noting, however, that Emerald Bay falls short of providing robust protection from swells, leading to potentially uncomfortable rolling conditions.
Emerald Bay’s beaches are divided into two primary sections by rocky shoreline. One section is shared by the Scout camp and Corsair Yacht Club.
The other section, known as the cruisers’ beach, features pleasant sandy terrain on its western edge and transitions to gravel on the remaining stretch.
For dinghy landings, the western end of the cruisers’ beach is the more suitable option, as it offers a flatter and sandier surface, making the landing process easier.
The Catalina Express operates boats daily to Two Harbors from the mainland at San Pedro in Los Angeles.
Two Harbors at the Isthmus
Two Harbors is another area of Santa Catalina with excellent snorkeling and abundant kelp forests to observe. The water is clear and clean, with 40-100 feet visibility. Water temperatures vary from 55-72 degrees in the summer.

How to Get From Avalon to Two Harbors
It’s a very short distance between Avalon and Two Harbors on Catalina Island. The island itself is a mere 22 miles long. The distance between Avalon and Two Harbors is about 21 miles.
There are two options to go between the two: By land or by sea.
Sea: Via Cyclone Power Boat 🛥️
The cheapest and fastest way to reach Two Harbors from Avalon is the Cyclone Power Boat.
Taking the Cyclone from Avalon to Two Harbors is a great way to see the island from a different vantage point and get some refreshing Pacific Ocean air.
