7 Best Bodega Bay Hikes
Whether you want a family-friendly walk like the Bird Walk Coastal Trail or a rugged adventure on the Kortum Trail, the best Bodega Bay hikes offer stunning ocean views, wildlife, and unforgettable scenery.
1. Bodega Head Nature Trails
Bodega Head, a massive granite promontory within Sonoma Coast State Park, provides a protective barrier for Bodega Harbor against the relentless storms of the Pacific Ocean.
The Bodega Head Nature Trail presents a panoramic view of Bodega Bay and the scenic California Coast, providing opportunities to witness migrating grey whales, sea lions, and various coastal wildlife.
Situated to the west of the San Andreas fault, Bodega Head is an enormous granite formation originating from the Salinian Block, a geological terrane that includes Point Reyes and the Farallon Islands.
Sharing its roots with the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Head has journeyed hundreds of miles northwest as the Pacific and North American plates continue to shift past each other.
The headland features two distinct trails that can be hiked separately or seamlessly combined to create a more extended hiking experience.
The first Bodega Head trail we’ll discuss is the East Trail.

The East Trail:
The East Trail travels across Bodega Head’s southern coastal bluffs, where you can see the two-mile Doran Split, sea stacks, Bodega Bay, and the ocean. And possibly some grey whales and dolphins if you’re lucky.
This relatively short hiking trail is great because it leads to a 2-mile stretch of beach where you can enjoy a picnic or sit on the beach watching gray whales, dolphins, and harbor seals.
Making it one of the most popular local hikes.
Distance: 1.7-mile loop through the headlands
Difficulty: Moderate
Type: Loop
The West Trail:
The West Trail loop faces west, crosses coastal cliffs, and leads to an overlooking view of the Bodega Marine Laboratory area and Horseshoe Cove with spectacular views of the pacific ocean.
Once at the top, you’ll have climbed 200 feet to reach the peninsula’s highest point, where you can enjoy 360-degree ocean views.
Distance: 1.2-mile loop
Difficulty: Easy, a gradual climb of 200 feet
Type: Out and back to the overlook. Offers one of the best places to spot whales.
The best time to spot whales is from October through February when Grey whales are southbound from Alaska to Mexico, and February through April, on their return voyage.

Tips for Hiking in Bodega Bay, California?
Before you head out on your hiking adventure in Bodega Bay, there are some safety tips you should be aware of.
Many of these I learned at the Bodega Bay Community Center when I was looking for a trail map, so I highly suggest stopping by before you take to the popular local hikes and miles of trails.
Bodega Bay is a great places to hike, but it’s better when prepared.
✅ Stay on the designated trails at all times – off-trail hiking can damage fragile ecosystems and make it relatively easy to get lost.
✅ Come prepared before heading out on a hike by packing proper gear and supplies, including food, water, a first-aid kit, a detailed map, a compass, and sunglasses/sunscreen.
✅ Hike with a partner whenever possible and let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Using a tracking aid such as your phone’s location or an Apple Air Tag is also very helpful for this.
✅ Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction – flip-flops or sandals are not recommended for hiking at any time, even if you’ll be near one of the popular beaches.
✅ Make sure to drink plenty of water regularly throughout the hike to stay hydrated. Alternating with an electrolyte-based beverage is also a good idea if you are sweating a lot.
✅ Stop into the Bodega Bay Community Center before your hike to get all the information you need about the trails you’re planning to hike.
✅ Be respectful of other hikers on the trails and practice “Leave No Trace” principles.
