Catalina Island Golf Cart Rental Tips: What I Wish I Knew Beforehand

Why You Need These Catalina Island Golf Cart Rental Tips

If you’re visiting Avalon, renting a golf cart is hands-down one of the best ways to explore Catalina Island — and one of the most popular. But what most people don’t realize is that a few simple golf cart rental tips can make the difference between a breezy, scenic ride and a stressful, rushed one.

If you haven’t already, read my full Catalina golf cart rental guide first — it covers pricing, hours, where to rent, and how long you’ll need. This post is your next step: the local-style pro tips, route recs, and mistakes to avoid. Trust me — I’ve made a few.

1. Rent Your Golf Cart Early — Even in the Off-Season

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is assuming there will always be a cart available. On weekends and during cruise ship days, rentals can sell out by mid-morning.

When we visited last October, we caught the first ferry from Long Beach and arrived just as the golf cart rentals opened — plenty of carts were available. In summer, though, or if you don’t arrive until the afternoon, you might find they’re already sold out.

This is the golf cart we rented. It’s so much fun to travel in a golf cart!

Tip: Reserve your cart first thing when you arrive, or better yet, call ahead. Some places offer reservations with a refundable deposit.

2. Don’t Waste Time on the Wrong Routes

Not all roads on Catalina Island are created equal. While most rental companies give you a basic map, it’s not always clear which areas are worth your limited time.

Here’s where you should absolutely go:

  • Mt. Ada overlook: Epic views and a great photo op.
  • Botanical Gardens + Wrigley Memorial: Quiet and stunning.
  • Lover’s Cove area: Peaceful coastline drive.
  • Crescent Avenue: Great for people-watching and cruising along the waterfront.

Avoid doubling back or taking too many scenic pauses on the steep mountain roads — your rental clock doesn’t stop ticking, and there are fees for being late. We went over two hours by 15 minutes, and they gave us a prorated rate. It was worth taking our time, but just be aware that it’s a hard 120 minutes.

3. Two Hours Is the Sweet Spot

Most companies offer 1-hour, 2-hour, and 4-hour rental blocks. While one hour feels rushed, two hours gives you plenty of time to enjoy Avalon’s best routes, snap photos, and even pause for a snack.

💡 Bonus tip: If you’re short on time or budget, one hour can work if you skip the Botanical Garden loop.

4. Bring a Driver’s License and a Card for the Deposit

Rental companies require:

  • A valid driver’s license
  • credit card for a refundable security deposit (usually $50–$200)

If you’re traveling with a group, the main driver must match the ID and card name. Some places won’t accept Apple Pay or debit cards — so bring a physical card just in case.

5. Take the Alternate Route Back Into Town

Here’s an insider tip most first-time visitors miss: instead of returning the same way you came up, loop around behind the hills for a more scenic descent. It’s quieter, just as beautiful, and usually has less traffic.

Ask your rental company if this route is open when you go — weather and road conditions can sometimes limit access.

6. Know Where to Park (And Where Not To)

When you’re done, make sure you return the cart to the exact rental location. You can’t leave it just anywhere, and Avalon’s narrow streets aren’t designed for random parking.

Also, be aware that street parking in town is mostly for locals with permits. Stick to the designated rental company drop zones to avoid a fee.

7. Don’t Skip the Pre-Rental Checklist

Before you drive off:

  • Check the battery level
  • Make sure the horn works
  • Ask how the parking brake functions
  • Get clarity on the route map

This sounds basic, but when you’re excited to hit the road, it’s easy to skip. A faulty cart or unclear directions can quickly eat into your time.

8. Driving a Golf Cart in Avalon Is (Almost) Like Driving a Car

Yes, you still need to:

  • Obey traffic signs
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Watch your speed (especially downhill — it’s steep!)

You’ll be sharing the road with bikes, cars, and pedestrians — so be courteous and cautious. And remember, no alcohol allowed if you’re the driver.

9. Add It to Your Itinerary Early in the Day

Golf cart rides are best in the late morning or early afternoon. The sun is higher (better visibility and photos), and you’ll beat the late-afternoon return crowd. Plus, it frees up your evening for dinner, drinks, or a stroll along Descanso Beach.
