There’s a particular stillness to the central California coast cities and towns that doesn’t quite exist anywhere else. Not the stillness of silence, but of suspension — of time slowing down just enough for you to notice how the fog drapes itself across a bluff, or how the scent of eucalyptus and sea salt clings to your clothes long after you’ve left.
This stretch between Los Angeles and San Francisco doesn’t shout its beauty. It murmurs it. In weathered fishing towns and wine-country valleys, in the curve of Highway 1 where the hills meet the ocean with cinematic grace.
These are places you stumble into and never quite forget — where the light hits differently, where stories settle in and stay awhile.

The Central Coast of California is a region that lies roughly between the Monterey Bay area in the north and Ventura County in the south.
It includes the coastal regions of Ventura, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, and San Benito. San Benito is inland and has no coastline.

The Monterey Bay Region is my favorite region of California because it includes the most stunning part of the California Coastline, including the 12-mile drive.
I’ve driven up and down the coastline from San Francisco to Los Angeles countless times, with each family member separately (I have a large family).
Montery County includes Monterey, Big Sur, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina, Castroville, Moss Landing, Carmel Valley, and Salinas. If you haven’t driven around this area, what are you waiting for? It’s stunning.
Big Sur
Big Sur is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast of California between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean.
It is frequently praised for its dramatic scenery.
Big Sur has been called the “longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States,” a “national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development,” and “one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation.” These quotes aren’t hyperbolic; they are stunning.
