The Best Time to See Whales in Bodega Bay
If you’re going to Bodega Bay to see gray whales, the best time to go is from October through February, when Grey whales are southbound from Alaska to Mexico, and February through April, on their return voyage.
The best place to spot the whales is on Bodega Head, specifically the West Trail.
The West Trail loop faces west, crosses coastal cliffs, and leads to an overlooking view of the Bodega Marine Laboratory area and Horseshoe Cove with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
Once at the top, you’ll have climbed 200 feet to reach the peninsula’s highest point, where you can enjoy 360-degree ocean views. However, the best spot to see the whales is on the cliffs near the West Trail parking lot. Sit on a rock with binoculars and wait.
On weekends from January through Mother’s Day, volunteers from the Whale Watch Public Education Program are at Bodega Head to answer questions and share their knowledge of whales and migration.

Bodega Bay is located in Sonoma Country, a little more than an hour north of San Francisco. It makes a great day trip from the Bay Area.

Some beaches in Bodega Bay are safer to swim in than others. But if you plan to swim, you should wear a wetsuit. The water can be cold.
